Main Streets of Australia Week

Main Streets of Australia Week

Australia is home to over 2.5 million small businesses. Making up 98% of the national business sector, their impact on the community is enormous.

It’s important that we support these small businesses and our main streets to ensure their survival, allowing them to continue to:

 Generate a significant number of jobs to those that rely on local or flexible work;
 Stimulate local spending and boost the economy;
 Support local causes and charities, as well as sporting groups and schools;
Provide a sense of belonging in the community for the elderly and vulnerable;
 Build connections and foster safe spaces for people to gather and interact;
 Allow many families to stay financially stable and afloat.

Main Streets of Australia Week 2024

Get ready to share your main street success story for the third edition of Main Streets of Australia Week! From September 16th to the 22nd 2024, Main Streets of Australia Week will offer a fantastic opportunity to spotlight your main street and town centre. This year, our focus shifts to showcasing unique, vibrant, and innovative examples of main street success.

We invite centre managers, trader groups, business associations and local councils to share their successful stories, strategies or local campaigns. This is your chance to showcase how your precinct has fostered shared experiences, created community spaces, or organised events that transformed your main street into a vibrant hub!

Applications are now open until 31 August 2024 for you to submit a case study to tell us about your main street initiatives. Mainstreet Australia will then prepare a digital marketing campaign showcasing and profiling the best examples of main street revitalisation campaigns.

Throughout Main Streets of Australia Week 2024,  we’ll highlight seven outstanding examples in a dedicated newsletter and across our social media platforms, offering you free marketing to promote your town centre and celebrate your success.

The September timing of Main Streets of Australia Week this year presents a strategic opportunity to kickstart a campaign aimed at addressing the challenges posed by Black Friday and advocating for local shopping. By leveraging this dedicated week, stakeholders can effectively rally support from government officials, media outlets, and the broader community to champion the importance of supporting local businesses. This proactive approach allows for the dissemination of information and the coordination of initiatives well in advance of the Black Friday advertising blitzes, ensuring that the message to shop and buy locally resonates strongly with consumers as they prepare for the holiday season. Through collaborative efforts during Main Streets of Australia Week, stakeholders can lay the groundwork for a successful campaign that promotes the vitality and resilience of Main Street businesses in the face of online retail pressures.

Mainstreet Australia is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to prioritise bricks-and-mortar shopping as a response to the impacts of Black Friday. By focusing on physical retail spaces, local businesses can reinforce their unique value proposition, fostering a sense of community and personalised customer experiences that online platforms often lack. Emphasising bricks-and-mortar shopping not only supports the sustainability of small businesses but also contributes to the vitality of local economies, preserving the character and diversity of Main Streets across Australia. This collaborative effort ensures that traditional retail remains a vibrant and integral part of the shopping landscape, offering consumers a compelling alternative to the frenzied pace of online sales events like Black Friday.

Make sure you get your entry submissions in before the end of August. Let’s work together to spread the word about the importance of main streets and shopping local during Main Streets of Australia Week 2024.
