Meet the Mainstreet Australia Hero: Tania Treasure – Economic Development and Tourism Lead, Nillumbik Shire Council
Main streets, town centres, local villages – whatever we choose to call them – are the heart of our communities. I have long been a passionate advocate for these vital places, and for the organisation that champions them: Mainstreet Australia.
As a former Committee Member, I remain immensely proud of the role our professional association plays in advancing best practice, encouraging collaboration, and serving as the unified voice for main streets across the country.
I had the privilege of serving on the Committee during a pivotal moment in the organisation’s evolution. At that time, we operated as Community Business Centres Victoria – a name that came with many different interpretations of what the organisation does and the communities we served. With the support of our members, the Committee undertook a comprehensive review to redefine our strategic direction and unlock future growth. From this work emerged a new name – Mainstreet Australia – and a clear, compelling statement of purpose. What might have seemed a small change at the time became a catalyst for a national movement supporting activity centres across Australia.
Since then, Mainstreet Australia has flourished. The association has delivered national conferences featuring international thought leaders, showcased world-class best practice, supported professionals and volunteer committees through the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, and appointed its first Executive Officer, the exceptional Liz Joldeski, whose leadership continues to strengthen and expand our impact.
One of the greatest strengths of the Mainstreet Australia community lies in the support that happens quietly, behind the scenes. Our members mentor emerging professionals, guide trader association leaders, and share knowledge generously with coordinators and economic development practitioners. This culture of collaboration ensures that those working on the ground to support our main streets are equipped, empowered, and connected.
We commit to this work because main streets are far more than physical spaces. They are where life unfolds – where we meet for coffee, celebrate birthdays, discover favourite restaurants, buy that special-occasion outfit, take our first job, grow our businesses, and build livelihoods. Main streets bring communities together, just as Mainstreet Australia brings our professional community together.
To everyone who has contributed to this remarkable community in any way: thank you. I am incredibly proud of what we have built, and equally proud to celebrate our association’s 30-year milestone.
What’s your favourite main street and why?
My favourite main streets are Diamond Creek, Eltham and Hurstbridge. Each has its own distinct character, blending inspiring locally owned businesses with a charming village atmosphere, all set against the beautiful natural landscape that Nillumbik Shire is known for.
